Whenever we plan a vacation, our travel plans include making a list of the ‘most-visited places’ in that region. Majority of the tourism advice is centered on historic landmarks. However, that hardly allows you to truly experience any new place.
Those who are enthusiastic about taking unusual trips forgo the touristy places and instead explore the lesser known sights. Here is why you should try and visit the non-touristy places in a country. Kampung-style…
Get a taste of the local culture
Contrary to popular belief, the perfect way to experience the culture of a new place is not by way of hiring a professional tour guide, but by tagging along with the locals. In all honesty, tour guides end up taking you to the popular monumental sights, museums, religious places, famous markets, eateries and so on. But if you are truly enthusiastic about knowing the culture and the people in any new place, you must ditch the guided tour and instead find a local to take you around. Forget trams and charters and catch hold of a fisherman in the area for a day’s voyage. You might just end up seeing some of the most interesting places and eating delicious local food prepared with fresh ingredients.
Enjoy the peace and quiet
All the sights which are ranked high on tourism websites tend to attract a lot of crowd, especially in the holiday season. Often one ends up feeling cramped in such places with a load of tourists visiting at the same time. When you try and visit the non touristy places in a country, you also get sufficient time and space to explore the area in peace and enjoy what it has to offer. You might also get the chance to engage in some local activities, such as fishing or horseback riding, instead of merely clicking away pictures of ancient monuments and forts.
Sometimes, a lot of the touristy places in a region, especially popular markets and shopping centers, tend to exploit tourists who come to purchase gifts, souvenirs and other things which are specific to the region. If you try and contact locals to find out which are the more low-profile shopping markets, you might be able to get good quality items at a much cheaper price.
So ditch the touristy places the next time you go for a vacation and tweak your travel plans to explore the non touristy sights!
